CoolSculpting® represents a major breakthrough in noninvasive body contouring—designed to reduce fat layer thickness in a safe, effective way that requires no anesthesia, sedation or injections. It is ideal for patients with bulges of fat in the abdomen, flanks (love handles), back, around the bra line, and under the chin. CoolSculpting® has been used for more than 7 years and millions of cycles have been performed worldwide. It is far and away the leading technology used to achieve non-invasive body contouring because of its efficacy, reproducibility, and safety.
The Back Story for CoolSculpting® (or the story behind CoolSculpting?)
Many approaches have been employed in an effort to achieve the goal of noninvasive body contouring. Lasers, light-based devices, radiofrequency devices, ultrasound, and a variety of other techniques were used in an attempt to reduce unwanted fat without surgery. Sophisticated research performed at Massachusetts General Hospital demonstrated that cold therapy is more effective and consistently reproducible than any other technology at achieving non-invasive destruction of fat without injury to other structures. This is possible because fat cells are more susceptible to reduced temperature (cold) than skin, so when fat and skin are cooled simultaneously, fat can be injured while the skin remains unharmed. We are very proud to have been among the first sites in the United States and initially was the first regional site to offer this exciting technology.
Where Does the Fat Go?
When the injured fat cells die, they are removed by the body’s natural repair mechanisms. On account of the gradual nature of the induced changes, careful testing demonstrates no detectable increase in cholesterol, triglycerides, or other potentially harmful byproducts of the fat breakdown process.
Who is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?
Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting treatment typically have discrete bulges of fat and are somewhat near their ideal body weight (within 25-30 lbs). Generally, obese individuals are not good candidates as the CoolSculpting treatment is not a weight loss procedure. The anatomic regions that we are able to treat most effectively include the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), inner thighs, outer thighs, back (the fat pads located just below the bra-strap area), male breasts, and the area below the chin. Other areas, such as the arms, can be treated in select cases. A wide variety of applicators for the CoolSculpting device including the CoolCurve +, the CoolCore, CoolMax, CoolFit, CoolSmooth and CoolMini provide versatility to allow almost any area of the body to be treated.
What is Actually Involved in a CoolSculpting treatment?
CoolSculpting treatments are performed in the office without sedation, pain medications, anesthesia, or numbing creams. There is minimal discomfort as the applicator is applied and the cooling process is started, then no pain for the remainder of the treatment. A typical session to will take approximately an hour depending on the number of areas to be treated. We are proud to offer two CoolSculpting devices which may be used simultaneously to enhance the efficiency of a treatment. A typical CoolSculpting® treatment session takes two to three hours, depending on the number of treatment cycles required. Some visits will be longer while others may be shorter. Patients can relax, watch TV, or get caught up on work during their treatment time.
There are no special instructions or physical limitations after CoolSculpting treatment. Patients may resume their normal activities, return to work, and exercise as usual. Bruising in the treated area may occur and resolves over a period of days to weeks (like any other bruise). If bruising does develop and is of aesthetic concern, we do offer complimentary laser treatment to help bruising resolve more quickly. This is rarely necessary.
Further Enhancing CoolSculpting Results with Z Wave Standardized “Massage”
It has been scientifically demonstrated that mechanical “massage” of the treated fat at the conclusion of a CoolSculpting treatment cycle enhances the end results. In an effort to maximize the efficiency of the “massage” process a device known as the “Z Wave,” which uses sound waves to disrupt treated fat cells, was developed. Scientific studies have proven that use of the Z Wave device to the treated area immediately after CoolSculpting dramatically improves final outcomes; our experiences strongly supports this finding. Our practice is the only in middle Tennessee to offer this important adjunct to CoolSculpting treatment.
How Much Improvement Can I Anticipate after CoolSculpting Treatment?
CoolSculpting treatment should not be considered a replacement for surgical liposuction. Carefully performed studies demonstrate an average 20% reduction in fat layer thickness with each CoolSculpting® treatment. This has proven to be true in all areas of the body and in patients of all ethnic backgrounds and skin color. The amount of improvement after a treatment can vary with some patients achieving more dramatic changes than others. Additional CoolSculpting treatments in a given part of the body lead to further reduction in fat layer thickness. This means that if you liked your results from one treatment but are wondering if additional treatment can produce even better outcomes, the answer is yes! Ongoing improvement in fat reduction can be measured for up to four months after a single CoolSculpting treatment.
Is the CoolSculpting Treatment FDA Approved?
CoolSculpting treatment is now indicated for non-invasive fat reduction in the United States. This means that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has carefully reviewed scientific studies performed to FDA-prescribed standards and has concluded that CoolSculpting is both safe and effective.
Our practice was one of the first in the United States to offer CoolSculpting treatments. Dr. Biesman has served as an advisor to Zeltiq, the company that developed the CoolSculpting technology, for many years and remains a member of the company’s Medical Advisory Board. This not only allows Dr. Biesman to have access to cutting edge information about CoolSculpting treatments performed around the world, but also to help guide the development of new applications of CoolSculpting technology. The benefits of CoolSculpting continue to expand as new applicators are developed to both reduce the duration of treatments as well as to expand the potential uses of this remarkable technology.
